Travel guide: Kolkata (India)
Kolkata seems to be a mix of Catholic and Muslim religion, in a cute way. People are friendly, there’s lots of European influence on the architecture and you have many things to see. This is a short travel guide to India’s Kolkata. How to get there, how much to pay and where to find a room.
How to get to Kolkata
If you’ll fly to Kolkata, find the building (or a shack, you never know) for pre-paid taxis and get a ride in the city. Fares are fixed (around 150 – 250 INR) and fair (you pay in advance). Same goes if you arrive with a train or a bus to bigger stations. If you are leaving Kolkata, you’ll need to bargain to get to the airport/bus/train station.
Where to find a hotel in Kolkata
Just go to Sudder street where are several hotels. We slept in Hotel Galaxy where we paid 900 INR for a room with air-con.
Where to eat in Kolkata
Nearby Sudder street you can find lots of small restaurants with Indian and European food. Don’t forget to try the delicious fruit juices which are also ridiculously cheap. I vote for pomegranate!
What to see in Kolkata
Local market is really close to Sudder street and it gets very active in the evening. You can go to the movies and have a Bollywood experience, visit Nobel prize winner Tagore’s house, Indian museum or Victoria’s palace and its beautiful gardens. There’s quite boring Planetarium show with feisty Indian lady host. Take a bus and explore other districts of Kolkata or take a food walk tour (pay by donations).
